Kareena Kapoor & Saif Ali Khan at IPL Bid Event - Photos

There were two new additions to the IPL list of teams recently. The two new teams are Kochi and Pune. The auction for the franchise of two teams had taken place some time last week. As reports of the bidding amounts were announced, there were reports about the lastest of Bollywood couples to join the bandwagon. That is, Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor. The duo had joined up with the Videocon group to bid for the Pune team. The others were the Sahara group who bid for Pune and Rendezvous Sports World limited (RSWL), for Kochi. However, Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor were not able to get the team of their choice, as their bidding amount was not as high as the other group.

Thus, finally, the Pune team of the IPL went to, The Sahara Group, for a bidding amount of US $ 370 million, and the Kochi team went to the Rendezvous, for a bid of US$ 333 million. Thus, from next year there will be a total of ten teams in the IPL. The bidding amount for the two teams is at par with the total amount that was collected for all the eight teams in the first year.
The Kochi team itself is said to be almost thrice the amount paid for Mumbai Indians, by the Reliance group of Industries. The other star couple Shilpa Shetty and Raj Kundra, who had purchased their team just before the IPL 2, last yearm was lucky to get Rajasthan Royals, team for US $ 15.4 million. However, this year, Saif and Kareena were not that lucky with the Pune team. Let’s hope they have better luck next time, just in case they are yet interested in the IPL!

74th Masters golf Tournament

The 74th Masters golf Tournament will begin on April 5 and run though April 11, 2010. The Tournament will take place at the Augusta National Golf Course located in Augusta,

golf

The Masters Tournament is well known for awarding the winner with a green suit jacket. In addition, the tournament is the only major held at the same course every year—the Augusta National Golf Course. Any winner of the Masters automatically has a lifetime invitation to play in the tournament again in the future.

Each year there are four major golf tournaments and the Masters, because it is held in April, is typically considered the first of these four major tours. The three remaining major tours include the United States Open, the British Open and the PGA Championship. Legendary golfer, Bobby Jones, helped in the design of the Augusta National Golf Course. Jones is credited with having brought the Masters Tournament into existence.

Rajasthan Royals

The team from India's princely state didn't quite command the kind of respect and interest that befits royalty. So when the Rajasthan Royals, led by Shane Warne, swept the opposition away and took home the first-ever IPL title, everyone was surprised. Sohail Tanvir and Shane Watson were the other big names that powered the side, but it was players like Swapnil Asnodkar and Ravindra Jadeja that shone.

IPL 2009 got underway with Bollywood diva Shilpa Shetty and her then fiance Raj Kundra also joining the franchise as co-owners. Kaif was left out and Watson was unavailable. Tyron Henderson, who was roped in after a tug-of-war with KXIP, played just one game. Yusuf Pathan starred in a win over KKR in the only Super Over of the tournament. At the 2010 auction, Rajasthan bought two Australian players - Adam Voges and in a surprise move, the out of action Damien Martyn. The team had bought out Tyron Henderson, Robert Quiney and Mohd Kaif prior to the auction.

Kings XI Punjab

Kings XI Punjab have an aura of glamour and verve around them thanks to owners Preity Zinta and Ness Wadia. They boast the services of the flamboyant Yuvraj Singh and dependable Sangakkara; the destructive Irfan Pathan and experienced Jayawardene. So when the first edition of the IPL kicked off, the team from India's lion-hearted state were looked on with awe and admiration. But the side could not progress beyond the semi-final stage..

In 2009, the spectacular South African setting did little to embellish the team's chances - they bowed out before the semis, depleted by the absence of Brett Lee and Sreesanth at various stages. Left-arm pace man Yusuf Abdulla was one of the finds of the tournament and he has been retained for the third edition. Luke Pomersbach and Nuwan Kulasekara were bought our ahead of the 2010 auction while they picked former India batsman Mohammed Kaif who is expected to recreate the magic with Yuvraj Singh in the Punjab side under new captain Kumar Sangakkara.

Kolkata Knight Riders

When Shahrukh Khan - India's biggest movie star - co-purchased the Kolkata Knight Riders franchise, the nation couldn't help but feel an affinity with the side. And when Brendon McCullum stormed into the competition with a whirlwind 158*, it drew a collective gasp of admiration from fans of the sport across the world. If Sourav helmed the side, then there was John Buchanan who powered the think-tank. But the team could not live up to expectations.

In the second season, suggestions of a multiple-captain approach drew a lot of debate but as it turned out, McCullum ended up leading the side throughout. But the side's prospects did not improve. KKR ended the tournament pretty close to the bottom of the table. Ricky Ponting and Morne van Wyk have been bought out ahead of Season 2010, while Shane Bond has been bought at USD 750,000. U-19 player Harpreet Singh has also been picked for the tournament.

IPL-Team Delhi Daredevils

Delhi Daredevils, owned by GMR Industries, have a number of genuine match-winners in their squad. They boast of Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir at the top of the order while wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik beefs up the middle-order. Tillakaratne Dilshan, along with AB de Villiers, has been a revelation in this format. Veteran Daniel Vettori adds depth to the squad. Daredevils made it to the semis in the first season.

In the second season, they rode high on the strength of Dirk Nannes' pace, topped the league, but again, lost in the semis. Gambhir has now stepped in as captain after Sehwag decided to step down. Delhi have bought out Oz legend Glenn McGrath before the third season. They picked up Wayne Parnell, the South African all-rounder for a whopping USD 610,000 at the 2010 auction. IPL-Team Deccan Chargers

The reigning title-holders of the second edition of the IPL, Deccan Chargers had a fairytale second season. Plagued by poor performances, the team was placed at the bottom of the table at the end of IPL's opening season. But they scripted an incredible turnaround in the second edition, claiming the title. Much credit for their rags to riches story goes to their captain Adam Gilchrist.

His compatriot Darren Lehmann joined the team as coach for the second edition. Deccan's pace attack is led by the fiery Fidel Edwards and the steady RP Singh. They bought out Sri Lankans Nuwan Zoysa and Chamara Silva ahead of the third edition. To further strengthen their bowling, they picked up the much sought after West Indies fast bowler, Kemar Roach, for a staggering USD 720,000 at the 2010 auction. U-19 player Harmeet Singh was also picked for the coming tournament.

IPL-Team Chennai Super Kings

chennai

Chennai Super Kings, owned by India Cements, managed to get the prized services of Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the inaugural edition of IPL. Quite understandably, the Indian captain commanded the highest price at the player auctions - a whopping USD 1.5 million. Australia's batting tour de force Matthew Hayden was roped in to give the batting a destructive edge - and he played his role to perfection in two successive seasons.

Stephen Fleming, who doubled as coach in the second season; the wily Muralidaran; batsman Suresh Raina; and all-rounder Albie Morkel helped Chennai reach the final. When the second round of auctions took place, Andrew Flintoff joined as one of the highest-paid players. In 2009, Hayden scored prolifically while his team entered the semi-final, only to be piped at the post by RCB. Fleming has now been bought out by the side and is just the coach. At the 2010 auction, the team bought South African Justin Kemp, they also brought in Sri Lankan Thisara Perera for a sum of USD 50,000.

Sangakkara replaces Yuvraj as Kings XI captain

 sangakkara240x132

Kings XI Punjab on Friday appointed Kumar Sangakkara as its new captain for DLF IPL 2010. The Sri Lankan player replaces Yuvraj Singh who had led the team for the last two seasons with great efficiency and passion.
A talented left-handed batsman and a vigilant wicketkeeper, Kumar is currently serving as captain of the Sri Lankan Cricket team. He has been recognised as the driving force behind Sri Lankan team in the past couple of years. His exemplary performances in the last two editions of IPL have made him one of the team favourites.
"I'm privileged to be given the honour and opportunity to lead the team. The team has had a good run under the captaincy of Yuvraj [Singh] and I enjoyed playing under his leadership in the IPL. This is a huge responsibility and I hope I am able to live up to the team's expectations.  We are all geared up and looking forward to playing some great cricket in the upcoming season and aim for a win," said Sangakkara at a tele -conference on Friday.

Kings XI Punjab is excited about the upcoming season and we as a team are universally determined for this to be our year."
Commenting on Yuvraj Singh, they said, "Yuvraj Singh, has been an inspiring captain during the first two seasons - we have been blessed to have him guide us since the inception of our franchise and his performance has been nothing short of excellent. We know Yuvraj is supportive of Kumar and is looking forward to delivering the legendary batting and bowling performance that he is so well known and respected for.

Kings XI Punjab happy with Abdulla and Kaif's inclusion

 kaif309x169

Kings XI Punjab added two more players in the team by buying Yusuf Abdullah and Mohammad Kaif in today's thrilling IPL 2010 auction in Mumbai.
Commenting on the additions to the team this year, the Promoters shared: "We are very excited about IPL 2010 being organized in India. The frenzy and fanfare will definitely be bigger and better this season. We want to win the Cup (this year), with an extremely well balanced team in place and we hope to give a tough fight. Further additions to the team today have strengthened our capability and we can't wait for the game to begin!"
Mohammad Kaif is a middle-order batsman who made it to the national team on the strength of his performances at the under-19 level, where he captained the Indian team to victory in the Under-19 World Cup in 2000. He can be both defensive and aggressive as the situation demands.  On the other hand, Yusuf Abdulla has also been confirmed as one of the KXIP team players. He is currently one of South Africa's leading domestic-competition bowlers and has also played first class cricket. Yusuf played exceptionally well last year when he was subsequently added to the Kings XI Punjab's Indian Premier League squad as a replacement following an injury to Jerome Taylor.

Anil Srivatsa, CEO, KXIP, said on the occasion: "We have one of the most balanced and steady team comprising some of the world's best players. There is an aura of confidence and passion to win amongst the players which is enthralling. We are very happy with the way our team has shaped up with today's addition of Yusuf Abdullah and Mohammad Kaif. We promise the cricket enthusiasts some action packed cricketing moments this IPL."
"I am delighted with the outcome of this year's auction with the addition of Yusuf Abdullah and Mohammad Kaif. Once again the Kings XI management team has executed their strategic plan under the pressure of the auction. Yusuf as we know is a great wicket taker in T20 and Kaif fortifies our middle order and raise our standard in the field. The new players are going to bolster the team's performance. My boys and me will ensure that our performance brings the Cup home this year!" added Tom Moody, Coach, Kings XI Punjab.

After Hosting the IPL Cricket Tournament in South Africa – Now …

Hosting the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket tournament is helping to burnish South Africa's image abroad and dispel worries about its readiness to host the 2010 soccer World Cup, officials say. The world's biggest Twenty20 tournament, which started in Cape Town on

indianpremierleaguelogosc3Saturday, was moved to South Africa last month due to security concerns in India as it holds general elections. The second edition of the IPL has brought a much-needed boost to South Africa, where flagging ticket sales for the FIFA Confederations Cup which starts in June had raised concerns over the country's ability to host a successful soccer World Cup in 2010. "This was a perfect opportunity to show the world that we can host a major event in 20 days," Gerald Majola, Cricket South Africa (CSA) chief executive, told Reuters. "Who can then doubt us, that we can hold a World Cup in 2010, given four years to prepare for it?" The choice also underlines the stability of South Africa's political system. South Africans vote in the most hotly contested national election since the end of apartheid on Wednesday but few expect widespread violence to mar the poll or interfere with the tournament. The IPL, which lasts until May 24, was expected to bring around 1 billion rand ($109.6 million) into Africa's biggest economy, South African President Kgalema Motlanthe said at the opening ceremony on Saturday.

FOREIGN VISITORS

500px2010fifaworldcuplo The chief executives of hotel firms Sun International and City Lodge told Reuters last month they expected the IPL to boost occupancy rates across their hotel portfolios. Majola said he expected more than 10,000 foreigners to visit the country during the competition. The 59-match IPL tournament, which features almost all the top international players including England's Andrew Flintoff and India's Sachin Tendulkar, has also gained popularity for its entertainment element -- Bollywood superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Shilpa Shetty both own IPL teams. Tickets for the opening weekend's double-header games in Cape Town were sold out within hours. In contrast, sales for the Confederations Cup, the test event being held ahead of the 2010 World Cup finals, have been slow, with approximately 200,000 of the 640,000 tickets sold.

The global financial crisis does not seem to have dented overseas demand for World Cup tickets but world football's governing body FIFA has criticised South Africa for not doing enough to spur local support. South Africa's high crime rates and its ability to finish building stadiums and infrastructure have also come under scrutiny but the South African government has pledged to beef up security and has repeatedly said it will be ready for the tournament. IPL Chief Operating Officer Sunder Raman told Reuters South Africa's hosting of the IPL would spur enthusiasm for the Confederations Cup and proved the country was capable of putting together international events. "If someone can pull together a tournament in 20 days, it talks volumes of the infrastructure available and the readiness of the country to host any tournament of any scale," Raman said.

What is Duckworth-Lewis Method | What is (D/L method)

0zb34yl97kg83fitljg In the sport of cricket, the Duckworth-Lewis method (D/L method) is a mathematical way to calculate the target score for the team batting second in a one-day cricket or Twenty-20 cricket match interrupted by weather or other circumstance. It is generally accepted to be a fair and accurate method of setting a target score, but as it attempts to predict what would have happened had the game come to its natural conclusion, it generates some controversy. The D/L method was devised by two English statisticians, Frank Duckworth and Tony Lewis.

A simple example of the D/L method being applied was the first One Day International (ODI) between India and Pakistan in their 2006 ODI series. India batted first, and were all out in the 49th over for 328. Pakistan, batting second, were 7 wickets down for 311 when bad light stopped play after the 47th over.

In this example, Pakistan's target had the match continued was 18 runs in as many balls, with three wickets in hand. Considering the overall scoring rate throughout the match, this is a target most teams would be favoured to achieve. And indeed, application of the D/L method resulted in a target score of 304 at the end of the 47th over, with the officially listed result as "Pakistan won by 7 runs (D/L Method)".

The D/L method of resetting targets in rain-affected one-day cricket matches has now been in use for well over two years and has been adopted for use in most test playing countries of the world. And it is the 'rain-rule' in use for the 1999 World Cup competition played in May and June and hosted by the England & Wales Cricket Board.

The method is the invention of Frank Duckworth and Tony Lewis. Frank is a consultant statistician and editor of the Royal Statistical Society's monthly news magazine, RSS NEWS. Tony is a lecturer in mathematical subjects in the Faculty of Computer Studies and Mathematics at the University of the West of England, Bristol and chairman of the Western Branch of the Operational Research Society

The method that they have invented is simple to apply provided one is prepared to take a few minutes to understand its logic. The calculations can easily be performed using nothing more than a single table of numbers and a pocket calculator although a purpose built computer program is available to undertake the calculations accurately and quickly in match situations (see further information on this below). With a little practice, however, there is no reason why anyone should not be able to calculate the revised target and in quick time. The authors firmly believe that the method is simple enough for it to be adopted for use at all levels of limited-overs cricket. This article provides a summary of the way the method works.

Basis of the method

The D/L method works using the notion that teams have two resources with which to make as many runs as they can - these are the number of overs they have still to receive and the number of wickets they have in hand. From any stage in their innings, their further run-scoring capability depends on both these two resources in combination. The table gives the percentage of these combined resources that remain for any number of overs left and wickets lost. An extract from the table is given in Table 1. Information is provided later on how the full table can be obtained, including the ball-by-ball version which is used when stoppages occur mid-over.

When a match is shortened after it has begun, the resources of one or both teams are depleted and the two teams usually have different amounts of resource for their innings. In this case a revised target must be set. The D/L method does this in accordance with the relative resources available to the two teams. If stoppages cause the team batting second (referred to here as Team 2) to have less resources available, as is more often than not the case, then their target will be revised downwards. If, on the other hand, as often happens when Team 1's innings has been interrupted, the stoppages usually result in Team 2 having more resources available and then their target is revised upwards to correct for the extra resources they have at their disposal.

Table 1: Extract from the table of resource percentages remaining
Wickets lost
Ovleft 0 2 5 7 9
50 100. 83.8 49.5 26.5 7.6
40 90.3 77.6 48.3 26.4 7.6
30 77.1 68.2 45.7 26.2 7.6
25 68.7 61.8 43.4 25.9 7.6
20 58.9 54.0 40.0 25.2 7.6
10 34.1 32.5 27.5 20.6 7.5
5 18.4 17.9 16.4 14.0 7.0

Reading the table

The single table applies to all lengths of one-day matches from 50 overs-per-side downwards. Because this length of match is by far the most common, the resources listed in the table are expressed as percentages of those available at the start of a 50-over innings. Thus when there are 50 overs still to be received and no wickets have been lost, the resource percentage available is 100%. A 40-over innings starts with a resource percentage of 90.3% relative to a 50 over innings. An innings shortened to 25-overs before it starts commences with a resource percentage of 68.7% relative to 50-over innings. (Although such innings have only half the overs of a 50-over innings they have all 10 wickets and so have much more than half the resources.)

In order to determine the correct resource percentage the batting side has remaining at any stage of its innings, the number of overs left must be identified. This number of overs left, in conjunction with the number of wickets lost, is then used to read the resource percentage remaining from the table.

For example, suppose that after 20 out of 50 overs a team have lost 2 wickets. They have 30 overs left. From the table you will see that the resource percentage remaining is 68.2%.

Suppose now that there is an interruption in play and 10 overs are lost from the innings. When play can resume there are only 20 overs left but there are still, of course, 2 wickets down, and the table now tells us that the resource percentage remaining is 54.0%. Thus the shortening of the innings has caused the team to lose a resource percentage of 68.2 - 54.0 = 14.2%.

Having started with a resource percentage of 100% and lost 14.2%, then if they complete their innings with no further loss of overs, they will have had a resource percentage available for their innings of 100 - 14.2 = 85.8%.

Applying the D/L method

The procedure for setting a revised target, which is the same for any number of stoppages at any stage of the match, is as follows.

1. For each team's innings
(a) from the table note the resource percentage the team had available at the start of their innings;
(b) using the table, calculate the resource percentage lost by each interruption;
(c) hence calculate the resource percentage available.
2. If Team 2 have less resources available than Team 1, then calculate the ratio of the resources available to the two teams. Team 2's revised target is obtained by scaling down Team 1's score by this ratio. The figure so obtained is rounded down to the next whole number to give the score needed for a tie. The target is one more run than this. The procedure by which a tie is always possible is a consequence of a change in playing conditions introduced internationally from April 1999.
3. If Team 2 have more resources available than Team 1, then calculate the amount by which Team 2's resource percentage exceeds Team 1's. Work out this excess as a percentage of 225 [the average 50-over score in 'first class' matches and one-day internationals (ODIs)]. Rounding this down to the next whole number gives the extra runs to add on to Team 1's score to give the score to tie. Adding one run gives Team 2's target.

Hottest Female Athlete "pole vault":- ~Allison Stokke~

One day Allison Stokke was a just a pretty high school athlete and the next she was an international Internet destination, although not by her own choice. Miss Stokke's photograph was taken during a high school track meet, where she was preparing to compete in the pole vault, and someone posted it to a web site. It didn't take long for other less reputable sites to pick up the image and set off a round of Stokke-mania on the worldwide web.

Hottest Female Athlete "pole vault":- ~Allison Stokke~ Miss Stokke isn't just a pretty girl; she's a pretty girl who happens to be a tremendous athlete. She was the California pole vaulting champion and is on scholarship at the University of California. She wanted to be known for her athletic accomplishments rather than purely for her looks. In terms of athletics, she wanted to be seen as Maria Sharapova, an attractive tennis player who wins, instead of Anna Kournikova, an attractive tennis player who just shows up and looks pretty. Miss Stokke could eventually become another Natalie Gulbis, a gorgeous LPGA golfer who has been quite successful.

The problem began to surface in 2004 when she began to receive messages from her friends that her photo had been seen on the Internet. She had 1,000 new messages on her social network site and a YouTube video of her being interviewed had been viewed 15,000 times. She began to receive interview requests from around the country, including one from Brazil. She went to her coach for help and to her parents (her father is an attorney) for guidance. They soon realized there was little they could do to stem the flow of messages and photos, other than to focus on trying to stop the ones that were particularly tasteless. They were successful in getting a fake profile of Allison removed from Face book and another taken off MySpace, which included a slideshow with a dozen photos and a chat forum. She told the Washington Post, "Even if none of it is illegal, it just all feels really demeaning."

Hottest Female Athlete "pole vault":- ~Allison Stokke~There's no question that Miss Stokke is an amazing athlete. Born in Newport Beach, California, she made the U.S. team that competed in the 2005 World Youth Championships, but couldn't compete because of a broken leg. As a senior at Newport Harbor High School she jumped 13 feet, 7 inches, which ranked second in the nation. She held seven national records.

As a freshman at Cal, Miss Stokke set a school freshman record by vaulting 13-5¾ at the Pac-10 Championships. She also qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships and was ranked No. 20 in the country. In the outdoor season she jumped 13-9¾, the second-best performance in school history.

But because of her notoriety, Miss Stokke hasn't been able to enjoy her success. She rarely  leaves her home and has grown weary of the attention she's garnered. In fact, the online media information on the Cal website does not include her mug shot, while all other student-athletes have their images on their biography pages.

Anna Kournikova was injured during a flight to Las Vegas

hard bat classic tennis tournament2 280609 Spending the weekend in Sin City, Anna Kournikova took part in the HardBat Classic Table Tennis Tournament at The Palazzo Resort in Las Vegas on Saturday.

Also attending an afterparty, the former tennis pro ended up having quite the unfortunate experience, as she got into it with another female partygoer at Lavo nightclub.

After a minor run-in, as insider tells People magazine: “The woman came back over and threw a drink on Anna and her assistant. The woman was definitely drunk.”

“Anna said she wanted the woman kicked out, but then everything started to escalate and she and the woman started shoving and pushing each other,” the source tells, adding, “Anna looked really shaken up.”

Enjoy the pictures of Anna Kournikova in Vegas over the weekend (June 27).
